Portwest FP23 Single 1.8m Shock-Absorbing Lanyard
The Portwest FP23 is a single rope lanyard with an integrated tear-open energy absorber, intended as a component of a compatible fall-arrest system. Its total assembly length is 1.8m. That figure includes the 1.2m rope, absorber and connectors, so it should not be confused with either the rope length alone or the clearance required below the wearer.
A snap hook and a scaffold hook provide the connection interfaces at either end of the assembly. Portwest lists a 52mm scaffold-hook opening, together with polyester rope, aluminium and heat-treated alloy steel in the construction. Connector shape and opening size must be checked against the proposed attachment points before the equipment is selected.
The manufacturer lists EN 354:2010, EN 355:2002 and EN 362:2004 for FP23, with a maximum rated load of 100kg. The energy absorber is part of the specified assembly, rather than an optional addition. A competent person must confirm that the lanyard, harness, anchorage and working conditions form a suitable system for the task.
FP23 is one of the single-leg options in our fall-prevention equipment range. Selecting it requires attention to fall clearance, permitted loading and rescue arrangements as well as product dimensions. Follow the instructions supplied with the equipment, maintain its inspection history and remove the assembly from service after a fall or whenever its condition is doubtful.

Directions for Use
1. Specify the complete system
Have a competent person assess the task and select a compatible full-body harness, anchorage and connection arrangement. Confirm the manufacturer’s operating limits, required clearance and rescue plan before work begins. The lanyard’s 1.8m length is not a substitute for a fall-clearance calculation.
2. Inspect the rope, absorber and connectors
Carry out the pre-use checks described in the supplied instructions, including the rope, terminations, energy absorber, hooks and identification. Confirm that connector mechanisms operate correctly and that required examination records are current. Quarantine equipment that is damaged, has an uncertain history or fails a check.
3. Connect only as instructed
Use the approved attachment points and connection method specified for the equipment and task. Check that hooks close and secure fully and are not subject to unsuitable loading. Do not modify the assembly, substitute components or assume that any available structural member is a suitable anchorage.
4. Withdraw after a fall and maintain correctly
Remove the assembly from service after it arrests a fall or if its condition is in doubt. Follow Portwest’s retirement and examination requirements rather than returning it to use on appearance alone. For equipment remaining in service, follow the prescribed cleaning, storage and record-keeping instructions.

FAQs
Is the rope itself 1.8m long?
No. Portwest describes a 1.2m rope within a complete 1.8m assembly that also includes the tear-open absorber, snap hook and scaffold hook. Use the complete assembly dimensions when assessing the intended connection arrangement.
Does 1.8m describe the required fall clearance?
No. It is the listed product length. The clearance needed below the working position depends on the complete fall-arrest arrangement and the manufacturer’s instructions. A competent person must determine whether sufficient clearance is available.
Which connectors are included?
FP23 is supplied with a snap hook and a scaffold hook; Portwest lists a 52mm scaffold-hook opening. Confirm compatibility with the selected harness and anchorage, including connector geometry and loading, rather than relying on opening size alone.
What is the maximum rated load?
The manufacturer lists 100kg. Follow the supplied instructions when assessing the wearer’s complete load, including carried equipment, and check that every other component in the selected system is suitable for that load.
Can the lanyard be reused after arresting a fall?
Remove it from service after a fall and follow the manufacturer’s retirement instructions. An apparently intact rope or connector does not establish that the absorber and complete assembly remain suitable for use. Do not reset or repair the equipment yourself.
What should I confirm before ordering FP23?
Confirm that a single-leg shock-absorbing lanyard is appropriate for the task, including the total length, connectors, rated load and clearance requirements. For a product specification query, contact Astral Hygiene; system approval and operating arrangements require a competent person.
