Portwest P220 combines a disposable FFP2 cup respirator with an activated-carbon layer for nuisance-odour relief. An exhalation valve helps release warm air, while nose padding, an adjustable nose bar and welded head straps support positioning. Each pack contains ten respirators for issue to wearers whose assessment and face-fit test support this model.
The full particle classification is EN 149:2001 + A1:2009 FFP2 NR. FFP2 has a UK assigned protection factor of 10 when correctly selected, fitted and used. NR identifies single-shift use, so the carbon layer does not turn this mask into a washable or reusable cartridge respirator.
Nuisance-odour reduction must be considered separately from protection against harmful gases or vapours. Carbon content alone does not establish a suitable gas-filter rating, and a reduced smell does not show that the atmosphere is safe. Directions for Use
1. Assess all airborne hazards
Confirm that the actual particles and exposure are suitable for FFP2 protection. Assess gas and vapour hazards separately. Do not rely on odour reduction to select equipment, and never use this mask in an oxygen-deficient atmosphere.
2. Inspect and fit
Read the supplied instructions, check expiry markings and inspect the facepiece, valve and straps. Use the model that passed the wearer's face-fit test. Position the straps and shape the nose bar as instructed, keeping the sealing area free from facial hair.
3. Check the seal and monitor use
Perform the manufacturer's fit check at every fitting and check compatibility with other PPE. Do not enter the exposure area if the seal is unsatisfactory. Leave the area if breathing becomes difficult, the mask is damaged or the seal fails.
4. Replace and dispose
Remove in a safe area and follow the workplace disposal procedure for the collected contamination. Discard by the end of the shift, or sooner if unserviceable. Do not wash or disinfect for reuse. Store unused respirators clean, dry and protected in their packaging.

What does the activated-carbon layer do?
Portwest describes it as absorbing nuisance odours. This adds an odour-relief feature to the FFP2 particle respirator; it does not establish protection against every gas or vapour or make an unsafe atmosphere suitable for entry.
Is P220 a reusable cartridge respirator?
No. It is a disposable FFP2 NR cup respirator. The carbon layer is part of the facepiece, not a replaceable cartridge. Do not wash it or carry it over to another shift.
Can I choose it just because it reduces a smell?
No. Smell is not a reliable test of safe exposure. The assessment must identify all substances and the protection needed. Select a suitable gas or vapour filter system where those hazards require one.
Does the valve change its protection class?
No. The valve helps with exhalation and comfort; the stated particle classification remains FFP2 NR. Correct face fit and a seal check are still necessary each time it is used.
Do wearers need a face-fit test?
Yes, for workplace use of this tight-fitting model. A competent person should establish a suitable fit, and the wearer must follow the fitting instructions. Facial hair crossing the sealing edge and incompatible PPE can allow leakage.
How does it differ from P223?
P220 is identified as FFP2 NR. The separate P223 carbon valved model carries the additional D marking for the optional dolomite clogging test. Check the exact model and classification required instead of treating all carbon masks as interchangeable.
